    Trump’s “maximum pressure” and anti‐containment in Iran’s regional policy

    Journal PaperDigest of Middle East Studies , Volume 29 , Issue 2, 2020 November , {Pages 150-166 }

    Abstract

    Two years after withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal, U.S. President Donald Trump's “maximum pressure” campaign has failed to change Iran's regional behavior, bring Tehran back to the negotiation table, curb its nuclear and missile programs, and counter Iran's proxy influence in the region. Instead, Iran has adopted a “maximum resistance” strategy to deal with Washington's pressure. According to the Neorealist school of thought in International Relations (IR), rising systemic or structural pressure on a given state is expected to alter its policies or even its regime. The case of Iran appears to challenge this expectation. This article suggests that Iran has adopted an “anti‐containment” strategy to deal with the U.S. press

    Abstract

    The Dorojin granitoid at the northeastern Isfahan is located in the central Urumieh-Dokhtar zone and within the volcano-sedimentary complex. The Dorojin iron deposit is the one of the several ore deposits that Dorojin granitoid body is caused in its surrounding rocks. According to microscopic evidences, mineral assemblage of wollastonite, garnet, pyroxene (diopside), amphibole, epidote, feldspar, calcite and quartz, Dorojin deposit attributed to the class of calcic skarns that occur during two stages progressive and regressive. Based on electron microprobe analysis, some garnets are andradite (An92-97Gr1-5) in core and andradite-grossular (An53-66Gr30-41Sp2-4) in rim. In the beginning, andradite fluid inclusions with temperature range from

    Abstract

    Water, as the primary human needs, play a vital role in all aspects of our life, such as social environment, production, the economy, food security, and politics. In the present investigation, Heavy Metals (HM) concentrations including Cr, Pb, and Cd, have been ascertained in drinking water resources. Besides, point estimation using Hazard Quotient (HQ) and Hazard Index (HI) formula and sensitivity analysis (SA) using the Monte Carlo Simulation technique, by 10,000 repetitions in Oracle Crystal Ball?, were applied to demonstrate the non-carcinogenic effects of HMs on different exposed populations (Infant, children, teenagers, and adults groups). According to the results, the concentrations of Cr, Pb, and Cd in water resources ranged from 2.

    Abstract

    Taenia ovis larvae can result in economic losses in small ruminants due to condemnation of infected tissues or whole carcasses. From 2017 to 2018, the T. ovis prevalence in 16,180 sheep and 7560 goats at the Najafabad slaughterhouse in Isfahan was determined. More sheep (477; 2.9%) than goats (90; 1.2%) were found to be infected, and the prevalence was higher in animals< 1 y (p< 0.0001), and higher in spring in sheep (8.2%) and goats (2.2%). Female sheep were more frequently infected than males (p< 0.0001); this did not hold true for goats. Of the tissues examined, T. ovis was found more often in the heart muscle of sheep compared with other tissues; however, infections in the heart muscle, masseter muscle, diaphragm, and triceps were simil

    The Covid-19 pandemic and conflict dynamics in Syria: neither a turning point nor an overall determinant

    Journal Paper , Volume 21 , 2020 January , {Pages 8 }

    Abstract

    Nine years into the (civil) war, Syria is in an extraordinarily poor position to confront the Covid-19 pandemic. Instead of the pandemic leading towards the uniting of local, regional, and international actors involved in Syria around a common purpose, conflict dynamics have hampered an effective response to Covid-19. Yet, the pandemic is unlikely to become a decisive turning point in conflict dynamics or an overall determinant of its future trajectory. Rather, in the mid-term, the relevant actors are likely to continue to follow their strategic interests in Syria, while some will have to adjust their operational priorities, as well as the strategies to pursue them, against the backdrop of the pandemic. Cooperation among external actors in

    Regime Security and the Logic of Alliances in the Middle East

    Vali Golmohammadi
    Journal PaperStrategic Studies Quarterly , Volume 23 , Issue 89, 2020 December 20, {Pages 105-132 }

    Abstract

    This article seeks to systematically survey the logic of unstable alliances in the Middle East after the Arab revolutions. On what basis do the governments of the Middle East enter into alliances with each other and what variables influence their fluid-forming coalition behavior? Contrary to mainstream approaches to explaining the nature of alliances, variables such as balance of power, anarchy, identity, and external threats alone are unable to understand the empirical mechanisms and complexities of Middle Eastern governments' unifying behavior. Using theories of alliance in international relations, the present paper proposes an integrated framework of "regime security" as an alternative approach to survey the roots of alliance in the Midd
