History

The Department of Mycology was founded in 1983 at the Faculty of Medical Sciences at Tarbiat Modares University under the supervision of prominent professors of mycology. At the time of the establishment, the group began its activities with the admissions of MSc students in the field of fungal identification and epidemiology.
On 1998/01/07, with the efforts made by the faculty members and visiting lecturers, PhD students were admitted to the Faculty with aim of training expert and efficient medical specialists in medical mycology in both educational and research areas.

The Mission of the Department

Since the human populations immune system gradual weakening is bound to a myriad of factors, the prevalence of fungal diseases has increased and intensified. In this regard, there is a surging demand for graduates specialized in the field of mycology, who are committed to the Islamic Republic of Iran. These graduates should be specialized in diagnosis and efficient in the field of education and research.
Therefore, the mission of the group is based on the improvement of community health and product development from the proposed ideas. The Department holds specialized workshops (drug sensitivity) (biomedical and statistical software) and essay writing workshops in order to develop students abilities. One of the faculty members is the certified member of the specialists board. Talking into account the research and educational backgrounds of the Department, offering new approaches in mycology is feasible.

Department Members Accomplishments

Considering the constant surge in resistance to antifungal drugs, the most important research areas of the Department are identifying and determining the antifungal properties of substances with diverse nano-particle origin, natural origin, and peptidic origin as well as preparing diagnostic kits.
