History

Given the progressive development of genetic science, especially Medical genetics all over the world, and the countrys need for graduates in this field of science to diagnose and treat genetic diseases, and since the absence of Medical genetics Department was noticeable at the School of Medical Sciences, 20 years after the establishment of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Dr. Hossein Mozdarani, a Medical School faculty member, presented the proposal to establish a discipline and a doctorate program in Medical genetics at the Faculty of Medicine to the dean of the Faculty in October 2001.
Subsequently, the official permission to admit applicants was announced to the University in March 2002. The doctoral program in Medical Genetics was approved by the Council for the Development of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education in 1993, and since then the permission for admitting postgraduate students was also granted to the Department.

The Mission of the Department

The Department aspires to train highly qualified and committed faculty members, researchers and experts in the field of medical genetics required by the medical sciences universities of Iran, contributing to the development and expansion of higher education, providing patients with laboratory services, and participating in the development and strengthening science and software production to be applied in scientific and research achievements, with special emphasis laid upon Islamic principles, and ultimately the dissemination of moral virtues and morality of sacrifice in line with the values and aspirations of Islamic Iran.

Faculty members and students are recognized figures in Medical Genetics for their leading role in science production and their research activities embodied in their innovative and pioneering designs. In addition to educational and research activities, the Department members undertakings embrace activities such as participating in designing and revising specialized programs in Medical Genetics for different academic programs, contributing to the countrys scientific forums of Medical Genetics, planning and implementing specialized workshops in Medical Genetics, peer-reviewing academic papers in editorial boards of journals, planning and holding conferences and congresses related to Medical Genetics, and the official membership in the committees and councils relevant to this field of study.

The most important research areas of the faculty member are conducting research in various fields of medical genetics, including genetics of infertility, the genetics of cancer, cytogenetics of diseases, monogenic disorders (single abnormal gene), epigenetics, genetics of coagulation disorders with the aim of researching the boundaries of knowledge, developing methods, and achieving the right biological markers to help diagnose and treat genetic diseases using topnotch technologies.
